Climb the ascension path
Slide the whole board with the arrow keys, the W/A/S/D keys, the on-screen pad, or by swiping. When two matching tiles collide they merge and double. Reach the golden 2048 tile to complete the ascension — your high score is saved on this device.

How to play Wintersmith's 2048
Quick start
- Press an arrow key, or swipe, to slide every tile as far as it will go.
- Two tiles with the same number merge into one tile of double the value.
- Each move spawns one new tile: a 2 most of the time, occasionally a 4.
- Reach the 2048 tile to win. You may keep playing afterwards for a higher score.
How it works
Controls
- Mouse or trackpad
- Click the arrows on the on-screen direction pad beneath the board.
- Touch
- Swipe up, down, left, or right across the board, or tap the on-screen direction pad.
- Keyboard
- The arrow keys or W, A, S and D slide the board. The board itself is focusable, so Tab to it first if you have been using the page links.
Tips
- Your score increases by the value of each tile you create, not by the number of moves. Merging two 256s adds 512 in one go.
- A new tile appears after every move that actually changed the board. It is a 2 nine times out of ten, and a 4 the rest of the time.
- Pick one corner and never move the board in the direction that empties it. Most losses come from letting the largest tile drift off its anchor.
- Reaching 2048 announces a win but does not stop the game. The board keeps going, so your best score can climb well past the moment you technically win.
Frequently asked questions
What number do I need to reach?
The 2048 tile. When you make it the game announces the win, but the board keeps playing so you can push your score higher.
How is my score calculated?
Every merge adds the value of the tile you just created. Combining two 128 tiles into a 256 adds 256 points to your score.
What new tile appears after a move?
A single new tile in a random empty cell. It is a 2 roughly ninety per cent of the time and a 4 the rest of the time.
Does a new tile appear if nothing moved?
No. If a swipe or arrow press does not slide or merge anything, the board is unchanged and no tile spawns.
How does the game end?
When the board is full and no two neighbouring tiles share a value, there is no legal move left and the run is over.
Can I undo a move?
No. There is no undo, and that is deliberate — the whole game is deciding whether a move is worth its consequences.
Can I play it on a phone?
Yes. Swipe in any of the four directions across the board, or tap the on-screen direction pad, and the tiles slide the same way they do with the arrow keys.
Is my best score sent anywhere?
No. It is written to your browser's local storage and stays on that device. There is no account and no server to send it to.
